Rockstar has revealed the release date, main characters, setting and editions of GTA 6. Here is what players genuinely know so far.
Few games have attracted as much attention before release as Grand Theft Auto VI, better known as GTA 6. After years of waiting, Rockstar has now shared enough information to give us a clear idea of the game without relying on rumours.
The trailers promise a colourful return to Vice City, but the story stretches far beyond one familiar location. Two main characters will lead the action, and their attempt to improve their lives quickly pulls them into something much bigger.
GTA 6 now has a confirmed release date
GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders are already open.
Rockstar has not announced a PC version. That does not mean one will never arrive, but PC players should not treat it as confirmed until the company says so.
The game will be sold digitally and through a physical box. However, the boxed version will contain a download code rather than a disc. Pre-loading is expected to begin on 12 November, giving players time to download the game before launch.
Jason and Lucia are at the centre of the story
GTA 6 follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, two people trying to change their lives in very different ways.
Jason grew up around criminals and later joined the Army before returning to illegal work in the Leonida Keys. Lucia has recently left prison and wants a better future for herself and her family.
Their plans collide when a seemingly simple robbery goes wrong. The pair become caught in a criminal conspiracy spreading across Leonida, leaving them with little choice but to trust each other.
Vice City is only one part of Leonida
Vice City returns as the most recognisable location, complete with beaches, nightlife, tall buildings and glowing signs. This time, however, it sits inside the much larger fictional state of Leonida.
Rockstar has also introduced the Leonida Keys, the wetlands of Grassrivers, the worn-down coastal area of Port Gellhorn, the industrial town of Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. Together, these places suggest a world that moves between crowded city streets, small towns and open wilderness.
What the trailers tell us about the game
Rockstar has not released a complete gameplay guide, but its footage gives us a useful look at the world. We see cars, motorcycles, boats and aircraft, along with robberies, police chases, crowded streets, wildlife and busy entertainment areas.
Short social-media-style videos also appear throughout the trailers. They seem to be part of how GTA 6 presents modern life in Leonida, although Rockstar has not explained exactly how they will affect gameplay.
Trailer footage is not the same as a confirmed feature list. We still need to wait for Rockstar to explain how missions, exploration and character switching will actually work.
Standard and Ultimate editions are available
The Standard Edition contains the main game, while the digital Ultimate Edition adds vehicles, weapons, clothing and other extras that appear throughout Jason and Lucia’s story. Standard Edition owners will be able to purchase the Ultimate upgrade separately.
Digital pre-orders include the Vintage Vice City Pack and one month of GTA+. Rockstar says the pack contains a classic car, clothing, hairstyles and a special weapon design.
These bonuses may interest collectors, but none of them appears necessary for following the main story.
Several important questions remain
Rockstar has still not confirmed a PC release, the final map size, detailed performance modes or what kind of online experience GTA 6 will offer. We also do not know how freely players will be able to switch between Jason and Lucia.
More information will probably arrive as the launch approaches. Until then, anything beyond Rockstar’s trailers, screenshots and official announcements should be treated as speculation.
GTA 6 already looks ambitious, but the most interesting details are still the simplest ones: a large new state, two connected protagonists and a story about a robbery that goes badly wrong.
The game deals with crime and other mature themes, so it may not be suitable for younger players.
