The mechanics are simple from the user’s side: when you sign in, your phone or laptop asks for the same fingerprint, face scan or PIN you already use to unlock it. Behind the scenes, a private key proves your identity without any secret ever leaving the device.
The security win is enormous. There is nothing to phish, nothing to leak in a database breach and nothing to reuse across sites. The most common attacks against accounts simply stop working.
Getting started is easy: next time a major service offers to ‘create a passkey’, accept. Your passwords keep working as a backup while the transition completes over the next few years.
